Dance Styles

At Leeds Dynamic School of Dance we teach a variety of styles for fun, fitness, and competition.

We focus on the following styles:

Freestyle/Disco

Freestyle/Disco is the most popular form of dance taught in the UK today. It evolved from the Disco scene in the early '70s and was popularised by music from artists such as The Jacksons, The Bee Gees and Donna Summer before becoming mainstream through the release of "Saturday Night Fever" starring John Travolta. Freestyle is perpetually in the public's heart because of similar classic films such as Fame and Footloose.

Today's Freestyle involves runs, spins, kicks and leaps as well as many other diverse steps and movements with lots of different arm and hand actions made in time to a strong beat.

Freestyle ― Slow Dance

Based on Freestyle, Slow dance uses music which is slow and dramatic, allowing dancers to use freedom of expression to convey emotion and enhance their style. The focus is on choreography, form and presentation, and is perfectly suited to those looking to increase their fitness gradually.

Rock'n'Roll

The mid '50s saw the rise of Rock'n'Roll, an evolution from the 1920's Lindy Hop and 1940's Boogie-Woogie, updated to the beats of hits such as Bill Haley's "Rock around the clock" and Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock". With acrobatic elements like high-kicks, lifts, jumps, throws and flips it is an energetic, competitive and fun style. Many moves from Rock'n'Roll form the basis of or have evolved into common moves used in the modern Street dance style.

Street

"Street" is an improvisational style incorporating many dance style such as popping, locking and breakdance, and is most often associated with Rap & R&B music. Dance moves can vary from humourous to acrobatic, though there is a heavy focuses on personal style which allows the dancer to tailor moves round their physical attributes and age.
